What Makes Me Pick up a Book? | Tag

I've been pretty much radio silent for an entire year, but alas, a new blog post! And what's more of a better way to come back than to do a bookish tag?! This is my first ever tag here on the blog, so I thought it was a great opportunity to jump in with an easy and fun post. I wasn't tagged whatsoever because I have no book blogger friends (I'm determined to change that with my return), so I scavenged around on google to discover this little gem of a tag! The original creator is a booktuber by the name Wonderfully Bookish. I'll leave the link here for anyone that wants to watch the video!

1. Do you judge a book by its cover?

I try my absolute best not to, but I can’t lie that a book’s cover holds a hefty percent over if I buy the book or no,t and the only time I ever except this is if someone tells me how good it is. My best friend once gave me a large stack of old books she didn’t want, and in that stack was the first book of the Lunar Chronicles, "Cinder" by Marissa Meyer. For years, I would always see the cover and loath it for no real good reason and swore I’d never read it. Well, one day I got bored and cracked the book open and delved into it almost immediately, finishing the whole thing in two days!

2. Focusing just on a cover, what attracts you to pick it up?

This is going to be hard to explain, but I’ll show photos! I adore any book that has elegant detailing etched around the whole cover. A few examples would be "Ruby Red" by Kerstin Gier and "The Hazel Wood" by Melissa Albert (haven’t read, but my lord is the cover drool-worthy!!!). I also really enjoy simple, almost modern graphic style covers, such as "A Study in Charlotte" by Brittany Cavallaro and "Emergency Contact" by Mary H.K. Choi.

3. Do you read the synopsis first, or prefer to go in knowing nothing about the book?

Yes, yes, yes! I very rarely ever go into a book without knowing anything about it prior. I also can’t help but read the summary of the book. I must know!

4. Do you have any auto-buy authors?

Currently, I do not have any authors that I automatically buy their new books, unless it’s a pre-existing series that’s ongoing.

5. Are you more likely to pick up a book if it has specific elements/themes?

I don’t see very many books with this type of element, but I love a story with time travel. I need to look up more books that are centered around it! If anyone has any recommendations, hook a girl up!

6. Do you ever read a book that has generally negative reviews just to form your own opinion on it?

I don’t pay attention to reviews, which I am looking to change. I need to stop shying away and keeping to myself all the time! If a book has negative reviews, I’ll still read it if I’m interested in the storyline, not just to see if it’s as bad as everyone says.

7. Do you ever buy a book just because another booktuber/blogger has talked about it a lot?

I have in the past, but not so much anymore. I more so buy a book because someone may have posted a cover or added it to their monthly tbr/wrap-ups and it peaked my interest. The last time I bought a book because another book person frequently brought it up was someone on youtube. I forget the booktuber, but they always raved about the Throne of Glass series. I’ve only read the first one, and although I enjoyed it, I can never get myself into the second book. Actually, I have the first, second, and fourth book (only bought it because it was signed and was under the impression at the time that I was still going to finish the series). It’s been a good five years or so, so it’s safe to say that the series has been DNFed.

8. Is there anyone whose book recommendations you always trust?

I’m not entirely influenced by recommendations from others, especially not anyone specifically. There are a few people I believe have good taste, but I rarely ever get a book because someone recommended it. If I had to pick someone, it would be Emma from Emmmabooks on Instagram and youtube.

If anyone wants to try this tag out for themselves, go right ahead. I tag anyone!

I think I'm going to make book tags a frequent thing here, so keep an eye out for more!

Also, don't forget you can reach me on my bookstagram.

With love,

Holly
